PostHeaderIcon How do gutter screens work vs. the more expensive gutter guards preventing leaves clogging up the gutter?

Would you recommend using the gutter screens?

Gutter screens keep out all the big stuff. Gutter helmets more times than not will keep everything out including most of the water. And some times they will suck the leaves right in with the water and you can not get in there to clean them out. Screens may get clogged up over time but you can hose right through them to clean them out. If you get a good quality screen they are the best gutter protection in my opinion. We use E-Z Lock and have had no complaints.

PostHeaderIcon How do I clear a blockage in my guttering downpipe?

Do I need to dismantle the whole guttering system. It doesn’t come apart in pieces easily. Any time saving ideas for a DIY novice (and a pretty hopeless one at that!). Thank you in advance!

If your downpipe is already blocked, however, then you will need drainage rods to push through the blockage from above.

These drainage rods can be bought at most DIY stores like B&Q

Simply push the rod down through the downpipe and whatever leaves or debris are causing the blockage will be dispensed at the bottom of the pipe.

How do I clear the angles in my downpipe?
If you need to clear an angled pipe simply use a stiff wire from the top and push downward through the pipe to remove the blockage.

If you can’t reach your gutters easily then type ‘guttering’ into Yellow Pages, followed by your postcode, for a list of professionals in your area who will have all the equipment necessary for the job.

Should you decide to go the DIY route when clearing your gutters, however, take note that the most difficult challenge is if a blockade occurs within the downpipe where you can’t see.

A handy tip to prevent this from happening is to place a rolled up ball of chicken wire, or a wire balloon at the point where the gutter meets the downpipe.

This will allow the water the run freely into the drainpipe, but will stop any leaves or debris from going down.

You will need to clear this chicken wire or wire balloon more regularly than once a year as a significant build up of leaves and debris will also take place here.

PostHeaderIcon How much to pay 2 guys to rake leaves and clean gutters?

I live in a primarily well to do neighborhood. I won’t find 2 teen boys to rake my yard and clean my gutters. My husband is military, he usually does this stuff but he’s not here. Anywaste, today a young guy and his uncle stopped by and asked about my messy yard. I asked him how much, and he sort of asked me how much I thought was fair. My yard is about 30×90ft and it’s heavily covered with leaves. They said they’d haul the leaves off for me too. The gutters are standard. I live in a single story 3br house.

So my whole question is, what’s a fair price? It’s close to Christmas and I can certainly understand someone looking for extra cash.

We have a 3000 square foot house and a four car garage. I pay a fellow $125 to do the gutters on both. So, I tend to agree with those who say $100 to $125 each.

PostHeaderIcon How do I put up Christmas lights when I have gutter guards?

The regular clips won’t work through the mesh of the gutter guard. I tried adhesive clips but they didn’t stay up in the rain we had yesterday. Any great ideas? (besides staples)

ah ha! shingle clips!!! :) they slide under the bottom edge of the shingle. then, you hook the light string into the other side of the clip. they work great! I don’t even have gutters on most of my house and we’ve got them all over the place! and the best part, is no holes!!! no leaky roof!! lol

Good luck!!

PostHeaderIcon Mosquito Dunks (set of 6)

Mosquito Dunks (set of 6)

Mosquitoes lay eggs in standing water around your home. Doughnut-shaped Mosquito Dunks float on water and slowly release bacillus thuringiensis – a natural pesticide lethal to mosquito larvae. Place all-natural dunks anywhere water is left standing for more than a week. Safe for birdbaths, rain barrels, ponds, ditches, tree holes, roof gutters, unused swimming pools, and anywhere else water collects. A single dunk destroys mosquito larvae in up to 100 square feet of water for a month. Set of 6. USA.
